A delegation from Wuhan University, led by their President Prof Gu Hailiang, visited the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today and signed an academic agreement with HKUST President Paul Chu on the exchange of students between the two universities. President Chu also accepted an invitation by President Gu to give a keynote address at Wuhan University on 6 May 2009. The Center for Demography and Sustainable Development (CDSD) of Fok Ying Tung Graduate School at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently completed a special training on Census Data Analyses for selected officials from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Pyongyang, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK). The training was under the direction of Professor John Ma, Associate Professor and Director of the Center and Dr. Yun Kim, Professor of Sociology Emeritus at Utah State University, USA, and Senior Population Scientist at the Center and it was fully financed by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).

Nanotechnology is one of HKUST's the internationally recognized strengths. As part of its strategic partnership with industry, the University today (Tuesday) signed a collaborative agreement with Finetex Technology Global Limited (Finetex), a world-leading manufacturer of nanostructured materials. The agreement will foster collaboration between HKUST and Finetex on a research project for the development and applications of carbon-nanofibers and nanocomposites. With the financial support of Finetex, the FINETEX-HKUST R & D Center begins its existence at HKUST today. The R & D Center will undertake multi-disciplinary research and development of nanofibers and nanocomposites and will in doing so provide technological expertise to Finetex Technology and the industry.

Hong Kong (February 4, 2008) — A delegation from Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology met with senior administrator and researcher from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) here today as well as to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will establish a long-term research collaboration between the two institutions. His Excellency Ali I. Naimi, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Petroleum and Minerals and Chairman of KAUST's Board of Trustees, led the KAUST delegation, which included Prof Choon Fong Shih, the Founding President-designate of KAUST and currently the President of National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as Mr Nadhmi Al-Nasr, KAUST's Interim President.

Lord Wilson, Chancellor of University of Aberdeen and former Governor of Hong Kong, visited HKUST today (Wednesday) to meet with HKUST students and also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on student exchange. The Memorandum of Understanding was jointly signed by top management of these two top-ranked universities, namely Chancellor of University of Aberdeen Lord Wilson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of University of Aberdeen Prof Duncan Rice, Acting President of HKUST Prof Roland Chin and Dean of Science of HKUST Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Roland Chin welcomed the old friend of HKUST, Lord Wilson who had played a key role in the founding of this university. Also speaking at the ceremony, Lord Wilson said that he was particularly happy and heartened to see the fast progress that HKUST has achieved in such a short period.

For the first time in its history, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is entering into a collaborative agreement involving three universities from three continents. Prof Paul Chu, President of HKUST (middle) today attended an agreement signing ceremony with Prof Gene Hambrick, Director of CMU International Development (left) and Prof Horst Hippler, President of Karlsruhe (right) to strengthen collaborations in research and education program in computing and communication technology. HKUST today (Thursday) signed an agreement with Karlsruhe, a top-ranked elite German research powerhouse, and Carnegie Mellon University, a premier university foremost in America for its expertise in computer science.

Citigroup and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today that they would host the third Citigroup International Case Competition from October 24-30, 2005. The event will see 19 teams of outstanding students from around the world compete on a real-life business case about a Hong Kong company and provide recommendations on important issues and challenges facing the company involved. From receiving the case to presenting their ideas, each team has a maximum of 30 hours to prepare. The case will remain confidential until the formal competition begins on the morning of October 27, 2005.
