HKUST Deepens Collaboration with Columbia University
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) delegation embarked on a strategic visit to Columbia University on July 18, solidifying the bond between two institutions dedicated to academic excellence and impactful research.Led by Vice-President for Research and Development, Prof. Tim CHENG, the delegation included Prof. Bert SHI, Special Advisor to the Vice-President for Research and Development and Director of Center for Aging Science, and Prof. Guojun BU, Head of Division of Life Science. The team engaged in productive discussions with Columbia’s senior leadership and teams, including Prof. Jeannette WING, Executive Vice President for Research; Prof. Sharon SPUTZ, Associate Vice President for Research Initiatives and Development; and Prof. CHANG Shih-Fu, Dean of Columbia Engineering. They explored collaborative opportunities in the field of aging, biomedical informatics and sustainability.

HKUST Showcases Thought Leadership at World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos 2025
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) contributed to global conversations at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2025, also known as Summer Davos, held in Tianjin, China, from June 24-26, 2025. This 16th Annual Meeting, themed "Entrepreneurship for a New Era", welcomed a record-breaking attendance of approximately 1,800 leaders from government, business, academia, as well as innovators and representatives from international organizations, media, and civil society. HKUST Associate Vice President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer) Dr. KIM Shin Cheul; Prof. Alex HE, Acting Director of HKUST Institute for Public Policy; and Prof. SU Hui, Chair Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Global STEM Professor, were invited to attend the event.

HKUST President Nancy Ip Advocates International Collaboration for Longevity at APRU Presidents' Meeting 2025
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Professor Nancy IP attended the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) 29th Annual Presidents' Meeting (APM), hosted by University of California, San Diego from June 22-24. The three-day conference, themed “Human Longevity in a Changing World: Innovation, Education, and Leadership for a Resilient Future”, uniting global academic leaders and experts to discuss the future of longevity and artificial intelligence (AI) research.
In light of the dual challenges posed by aging populations and increasing chronic diseases, President Ip joined distinguished university leaders, including President Kohei ITOH, Keio University; Vice-Chancellor and President Peter HØJ, The University of Adelaide; and Prof. LU Yanqing, Vice-President of Nanjing University, to share insights on how AI can advance research and innovation focused on longevity and improve quality of life across various disciplines.

HKUST and University of Bristol Join Forces for Global Research Impact
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly welcomed Prof. Evelyn WELCH, Vice-Chancellor and President, and Michael BENSON, Director of Global Partnerships at the University of Bristol, on May 20 to deepen research ties and spark new collaboration.
HKUST Provost Prof. GUO Yike and HKUST (Guangzhou) Vice-President and Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School Prof. Charles NG had a productive meeting with the Bristol delegation. This visit marked a significant milestone with the signing of two agreements - a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and the launch of a joint HKUST-Bristol Global Knowledge Network(GKN) research seed grant initiative. The joint research initiative aims to foster global academic collaboration between researchers at the two universities and maximize research impact.

HKUST Strengthens Academic Ties with Leading Universities in Vietnam and Indonesia
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly welcomed delegations from Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to campus last week to strengthen academic ties and foster collaborative partnerships.
The VNU-HCMC Chancellor Prof. Vu Hai QUAN led the delegation to engage in fruitful discussions with HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP and the HKUST team, including Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning); Prof. Emily NASON, Director of Undergraduate Recruitment & Admissions Office; Prof. Tuan Anh NGUYEN, Associate Professor from the Division of Life Science; Euphemia CHOW, Head of Global Learning; and Yvonne LI, Head of Global Engagement and Greater China Affairs. Discussions covered diverse areas, including student exchange programs and joint research initiatives, underscoring the joint commitment of both institutions to uphold academic excellence and innovation.
