HK startup PetalGard, the winner of the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2024, developed natural pest-repellent pellets made from recycled materials, which can effectively drive away pests by combining AI technologies to analyze rodent behaviors. Its Founder & CEO Ricky LUI is a HKUST BIOT alumnus.

During a media tour to the HKUST SZ-HK Collaborative Innovation Research Institute (SHCIRI), VPRD Prof. Tim CHENG outlined the University's future plans, noting the "incubation in HK, commercialization in SZ" model that facilitates the transfer of cutting-edge technologies from the lab to the market.
